Digestive Enzymes: Your Body’s Food Breakdown Team

Digestive Enzymes: Your Body’s Food Breakdown Team

Have you ever wondered how your body turns a meal into nutrients it can actually use? Digestive enzymes are a major part of that process.

Your body naturally produces enzymes—primarily in the mouth, stomach, pancreas and small intestine—that help break carbohydrates, proteins and fats into smaller components that can be absorbed.

🍽️ Meet Some of Your Digestive Enzymes

Amylase helps break down carbohydrates and starches.

Proteases help break proteins into smaller peptides and amino acids.

Lipase helps digest dietary fats.

Lactase helps break down lactose, the natural sugar in dairy products.

Your pancreas plays an especially important role by releasing several digestive enzymes into the small intestine.

🍍 What About Foods With Enzymes?

Certain foods naturally contain enzymes. Pineapple contains bromelain, while papaya contains papain, both of which break down proteins. Fermented foods may also contain enzymes and microorganisms, although that doesn’t mean they replace the digestive enzymes your body produces.

The best approach is still a varied, balanced diet, rather than relying on one “digestive” food.

💊 Do You Need Digestive-Enzyme Supplements?

Not everyone does.

Specific enzymes can be useful when there’s a specific need for example, lactase can help some people with lactose intolerance, and prescription pancreatic enzymes are used for certain medical conditions involving pancreatic insufficiency.

But frequent bloating, diarrhea, abdominal pain, greasy stools, unexplained weight loss or other persistent digestive problems shouldn’t automatically be treated with over-the-counter enzymes. Finding the underlying cause is more important.

💚 Support Digestion With the Basics

Give your digestive system a strong foundation with fiber-rich foods, adequate fluids, regular movement, balanced meals and enough time to eat without rushing.

Your digestive system is already designed to do an incredible amount of work. Wellness isn’t always about adding another supplement sometimes it’s about supporting what your body naturally does.
